Blisters on the feet are fluid filled cavities under one of the skin layers. They form through friction and pressure between wet skin and stocking or shoe. The fluid presses on the underlying nerve endings, causing pain. The deeper a blister lies in the skin layer, the more painful it is and the slower it heals.

Bladder on foot: When should you go to the doctor?

A blister on the foot is usually not a case for the doctor. However, if the liquid from a punctured blister is cloudy or smells unpleasant, or if the skin in the area reddened and hurts, you should go to the doctor. It could have already developed a serious inflammation.

Special care should also be taken if you have diabetes mellitus. Diabetes can cause nerve damage (diabetic polyneuropathy), which affects the sensation on the feet - they no longer feel a blister on the foot and other skin damage so easily. However, if left untreated, these can lead to complications, as wounds in diabetics heal worse at the same time. Sufferers should therefore regularly inspect their feet and, if they have blisters on their feet and other skin changes, go to the doctor or a medically trained pedicurist (podiatrist).

With the following tips you can even treat your blisters:

  • Smaller blisters should not be opened - the intact skin over the bladder (bladder roof) provides the best protection against infection. A tightened plaster over the bladder padded this.
  • You can puncture larger, live bubbles, but only if they are superficial bubbles. Using a clean needle (previously disinfected with dilute alcohol!), Gently prick into the bladder, allow the fluid to drain off and allow the skin to dry a little. Finally, stick a plaster over it. To accelerate the healing process, you can remove the patch at night, then air comes up.
  • Before you stick the plaster on the pricked bubble, you can also disinfect it.
  • Never cut the skin over a blister, otherwise inflammation may occur.

Bladder on the foot: This is how you can prevent

If you want to prevent a blister on the foot, you should follow the following advice:

  • Look for well-fitting, padded shoes - whether it's street shoes or sports shoes.
  • Make sure that socks do not wrinkle in the shoe because they can quickly cause a blister on the foot due to pressure and friction. Socks without freely applied seams (for example special sports socks) are best suited.
  • New shoes can quickly leave a bubble on the foot. To prevent this, you can rub it with a deer tallow before it is worn for the first time - this reduces friction. It is also helpful to rub the shoes inside with soap or Vaseline.
  • In hiking boots you should rather wear a pair of thick socks instead of a pair of thick socks on top of each other. Then the socks rub against each other and not on the foot - one Bubble on the foot is thus prevented.
