Scar

When damaged skin is closed by new connective tissue, more or less large scars develop.

Scar on the stomach

Scars are the result of wound healing. Above all, visible scars, such as acne scars on the face or large scars as a reminder of operations, sometimes cause considerable suffering. Those affected often feel less attractive. They experience a disruption of their self-image, which can lead to a depressive withdrawal. In addition, other people's eyes on the scars are often distracting.

If scars grow far beyond the original level of tissue, physicians call the scars celloids or celloid scars. Sometimes scar tissue grows over several centimeters high and forms bulges that are over 10 cm thick. Most of these celloids arise due to a disturbed wound healing. Here, the - very fine tuned - up and degradation of connective tissue is disturbed. In genetically pre-stressed people even the smallest injuries such as mosquito bites are enough to cause celloids. Celloids do not re-emerge by themselves. Sometimes they continue to grow without treatment.

Wound healing disorders may also be associated with insufficient or lack of scar formation. Then wounds, especially chronic wounds, do not close or not sufficiently with scarred tissue. As a result, the wound remains permanently open.

symptoms

Scars can not only be aesthetically disturbing but also lead to functional disabilities, for example when they are in joints. Scars can sometimes cause pain or itching - often long after they have formed.

causes

  • Injuries (cuts and abrasions)
  • burns
  • acid burns
  • operations
  • vaccinations
  • Skin diseases, z. Acne.

treatment

The treatment of scars may be necessary for medical reasons. This is the case, for example, when a large scar breaks or partially reopens. Then, the scar usually needs to be opened and closed again.

Another medical reason for the treatment of scars is pain or growth in the scar area. Depending on the cause of the pain, a new operation may be necessary. Often, however, it is sufficient to care for the scar well or to treat tense scar areas with a special scar massage.

In case of growth, your doctor may abrade or remove excess tissue.

Therapy of celloid scar

Treating Celloid Scars poses a major challenge to physicians. Often several procedures over many years are necessary until a satisfactory treatment success can be achieved. Smaller celloids are often removed with the scalpel, larger by surgery. Subsequently, the skin is often treated with silicone gel or silicone films. Gels and slides are worn over several months on the scar. Why these editions work exactly is not yet known. Presumably, the silicone layer inhibits the release of water and heat through the skin, whereby the scar tissue is better supplied with blood and thus rebuilt faster.

Many patients benefit from a special cortisone therapy. In the process, the smallest cortisone crystals are injected into the scar tissue, which are supposed to prevent excessive scar formation.

Furthermore, there is the method of pressure treatment, which is applied with special compression systems (such as splints or bandages) pressure on the scar. This is to prevent excessive cell growth and so keep the scar flat.

There are also the possibilities of cryogenic and icing therapy with liquid nitrogen. The cold causes the excess scar tissue to die off. Also, X-rays are sometimes used against celloid scar.

Therapy for missing or insufficient scarring

Wounds with missing or insufficient scarring and chronic open wounds are very difficult to treat. In addition, the treatment is tedious, sometimes it takes several years to decades. Often several attempts at therapy are necessary until the individually correct procedure is found.

Cosmetic scar treatment

Sanding or lasering are the preferred methods in cosmetic scar treatment. The grinding takes place mechanically or chemically. Another method is the injection of dellenförmig sunken scars. For example, hyaluronic acid is injected into the tissue under the scar, causing tissue elevation. Disadvantage of this cosmetic method: It must be repeated at regular intervals, as hyaluronic acid in the body degrades within 6 to 12 months.

self-help

Already during the wound healing process you should pay attention to a good scar care. Make sure that even small wounds do not get infected. This can be achieved by sufficiently protecting the wound (plaster, dressing) and, if necessary, disinfecting it.

Let wounds heal in peace. Curious glances under a bandage or scraping off scab will only increase the risk of further infection and disrupted scarring.

Healed scars should be kept as soft as possible - but only after complete wound healing - with a special scar cream.

During wound treatment, it is advisable to avoid intense sunshine, tanning beds, sauna and cold.

FAQ - 💬

❓ How do I heal my scar?

👉 How Can Scars Be Treated?

  1. Topical treatments, such as vitamin E, cocoa butter cream, silicone gel, onion extract products, and several commercial skin care products like Vaseline and Aquaphor that are sold over the counter may be somewhat effective in helping to heal scars.
  2. Surgery. ...
  3. Steroid injections. ...
  4. Radiotherapy.

❓ Do scars go away?

👉 A scar is a mark left on the skin after a wound or injury has healed. Scars are a natural part of the healing process. Most will fade although they never completely disappear.

❓ What are the 4 types of scars?

👉 Skin tissue repair results in a broad spectrum of scar types, ranging from a “normal” fine line (fig 1) to a variety of abnormal scars, including widespread scars, atrophic scars, scar contractures, hypertrophic scars, and keloid scars.

❓ How do you get scars?

👉 A scar is usually composed of fibrous tissue. Scars may be formed for many different reasons, including as a result of infections, surgery, injuries, or inflammation of tissue. Scars may appear anywhere on the body, and the composition of a scar may vary.

❓ Why do scars turn dark?

👉 There are a few reasons why a scar might turn dark. For example, if a scar was exposed to sunlight during the healing process, there's a good chance the scar tissue will become pigmented. Dark scars can also be caused by inflammation, poor healing, or the genetics of your skin and how your skin heals.

❓ Which cream is best for scar removal?

👉 Healthline's picks for the best scar creams

  • SkinCeuticals Phyto +
  • Cica-Care Gel Sheet.
  • Cimeosil Scar and Laser Gel.
  • ScarAway Silicone Scar Gel.
  • Tosowoong Green Tea Natural Pure Essence.
  • Honeydew Blemish Cream.
  • Mederma for Kids.

❓ Do scars ever fully heal?

👉 Most scars fade over time and don't cause long-term health problems. How a scar changes depends on its location, size and type. A scar may fade so much that you can barely see it, but it never completely goes away. Some scars cause problems months or years later.

❓ Do all scars turn white?

👉 Scars can take up to a year to heal completely, with most of the process occurring out of sight. In most cases, the scar will turn from pink to white as the scar heals. The skin will also flatten out in the affected area. This happens because bodies produce scar tissue to mend the damage that has happened.

❓ Why do scars turn white?

👉 White scars, or “hypopigmented” scars, are due to a loss of melanocytes that manufacture pigment. This loss is usually permanent, but can sometimes be improved by fractional laser resurfacing, which allows some of the pigment cells to migrate back into the lighter-colored skin areas.

❓ How long do scars last?

👉 It can take up to 12-18 months after your injury or operation for a scar to heal. A normal scar will become darker initially and after a period of time this will start to fade. Dark scars can remain for years or indefinitely in people with darker skin.

❓ Do scars go away on face?

👉 Most scars fade over time and don't cause long-term health problems. How a scar changes depends on its location, size and type. A scar may fade so much that you can barely see it, but it never completely goes away. Some scars cause problems months or years later.
