Signals of body communication

What is body communication?

Body communication is non-verbal communication, that is, it does not work on spoken words. It is basically limited to the area of relationship communication and interaction. Body posture, gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, outward appearance and voice are among the body signals that sometimes convey messages other than the spoken ones. The verbal language conveys facts, while the body signals convey the meaning.

Body language reveals the signs of internal sensitivities or interpersonal attitudes. For example, if we find that our counterpart is not feeling well, or we can expect to be lied to, we pay close attention to facial expressions and body language, to every smallest signal.

Turn off the sound on the TV once and try to interpret what is being said, based on the body movements of the people. You will notice that people communicate a lot about the body. If you turn up the sound again, you will be surprised in part what the protagonists are talking about and what the body, the facial expressions and other signals deny.

How can you interpret body language?

People who grow up in a particular culture learn to interpret certain signals of body language correctly. These are culture-specific and conventionalized behavioral signals: For example, every Greek knows that nodding means negation and, conversely, shaking his head expresses approval.

We learn to correctly interpret subtleties in gestures and facial expressions through close observation of our fellow human beings and ourselves. Thus one can recognize whether the person to be conversational is happy, sad or angry, whether he is lying, impatient or bored. One notices whether one is liked by one's counterpart, receives approval or rejection, is humiliated, whether he is suspicious, angry or worried.

Examples of the meaning of body signals

On tilted head means: "I am not dangerous." This is because your mother pitied you with your head tilted when you hit your knee. Her mother also patted her hands or hair when she wanted to comfort you. We do that ourselves when we grow up and have no mother to do this for us: we pat ourselves on the cheeks or on the arm, or rub our hands together.

Maybe you hold yours Hands in front of the faceif you should say something. This is a sign of uncertainty. This interpretation also applies if you have a beard that you roll between your fingers, or if you play with your hair. The gesture of scratching one's head means "Well, I think," "I need some time." Some people shake hands when they speak - a sign of shyness.

Also the way someone on one Chair is sitting, is not always random. If you sit in a chair hanging lightly and swing your arms and legs, this is probably a sign that you are well and that you are relaxed. Sitting on the edge of the chair with legs outstretched, one foot crossed over the other, may mean: "What does that matter to me!"

While people may learn to use their body language consciously, they may never learn to control it. At some point, the person loses control, for example, when he becomes too eager or angry. Look at a discussion between politicians. You see supposed body control, even if someone gets angry, because then maybe a corner of the mouth or a vein on the forehead swells and turns red. The same thing happens with the cheeks of a woman when she becomes embarrassed or angry, while in a man's ears usually blush.

What should be considered when interpreting body language?

The interpretation of nonverbal communication can not be detached from verbal communication. On the contrary, the body signals usually contribute to a better understanding of the spoken language. The wholeness must be evaluated.

Studies show that most of the time the speaker's face, especially the forehead, eye and mouth area, is most reliable for assessing his mood. The eyes themselves have a signaling effect as they act both far and near. The viewing direction and the duration, how far the eyelids are open, all have a great potential for information.

In this way you can read pleasure, surprise, anger or contempt on the basis of the visual impression, while fear is usually perceived audibly, ie via the ear.To assess the other person's emotional state, you must observe the facial muscles, for example, whether they are tense or whether the mouth is softening.

Tense facial features, of course, betray either anger or anger, whereas soft, relaxed features are interpreted as friendliness and kindness. However, a smile always has to involve the eyes. A mouth that laughs without his eyes laughing is a contrived and insincere smile.

Eyebrows that are lowered and lifted at a fast pace are the consent to social contact. Express surprise and amazement by raising your eyebrows and holding them up for a while. Raise your eyebrows and blink at the same time with one eye - so flirt!

Tears and laughter are ways of expression that we assumed are easy to interpret. However, tears are an expression of several different emotional states: sorrow, joy and anger. Laughter can be a sign of joy and friendliness, but also of contempt and sarcasm. We can also laugh when we get scared or when we experience something very unpleasant.
